Aquaduct

We headed north on Friday through Wales.  Actually we had to go through a part of England to get there. One thing Brian suggested was to see an aqueduct that was built many years ago to transport slate from the slate mines.  It was so impressive!  Here is a view from the side.

It spans a river and connects a canal and is pretty high as you can tell by the trees.  Here's the river below.

There are long, narrow boats which travel down the canal.  Boats like these were used to carry the slate to different parts of Wales.  People can rent these boats for a holiday (you can sleep and cook in them like a house boat) or just a day trip or a short guided trip. here is a boat on the canal. We walked along this canal for awhile.

To show you how the aquaduct works check out the pictures below.  We walked on the tiny walkway next to the water.  See the boat?

And here's a picture of me proving I did it even though I was terrified in the beginning!

Halfway across we met a couple from England and chatted with them.  Many people from the UK have been to America and always want to know where we're from.  Not many have been to Utah.  The sign below tells a bit about the canal.  Try to read the top version--it's in Welsh!

After the aquaduct we went over Horseshoe Pass to spend the night outside of Ruthin (pronounced Rithin) in a hamlet called Clocaenog (try your hand at pronouncing that one)! The B&B was across the lane from the school which is taught in Welsh primarily.  Here's a pic of the view at the pass.
